This month’s challenge on listening has come to an end. I am doing a bit better about listening and it taught me a few things about myself and how I communicate.

I did have an interesting conversation with Paul one day.
He said something about how I interrupt the flow of a conversation with a new topic. I was like, “huh?”
So I talked to him about conversations and how you move from one topic to another. Apparently the man with many words likes to finish a topic before moving on. I’m still not sure what that looks like. Is there a gesture that signals you’re done? Do you take an extra breath?
It may have something to do with an individual’s conversational style. Still processing that one, but I am slowing down in conversation and I try to give more time for each topic. I’ve even asked a couple of times if he’s done. It can’t hurt.

When I first got married, I read a book called “Men Are Like Waffles, Women Are Like Spaghetti” (I know, goofy title). It sounds a lot like what you’re describing. The basic idea is that women tend to connect one thought to the next without difficulty, while men generally like to compartmentalize their thinking. If you haven’t read it before, I think you’d probably find it interesting. (Plus, from what I remember it was a quick and entertaining read as well as helpful.)
Thank you so much for your ministry- it has been a blessing for me!
Excellent post.
Barbara will often leave minutes between one linked thought and another…and if I say something, I have interrupted. Timing is everything, and it’s definitely not uniform.
