A few days ago I wrote about being sensitive to your husband’s needs when he is stressed.
Andrew, a regular commenter, said:
One thing I’d add is that if your husband says, “I’m OK, don’t need anything” to take it at face value.
I love this comment because it points to an important kind of respect.
Take his words at face value.

How many times do we put our husband’s words through our internal filter and come up with something different?
Is he a chronic liar? Is he self-deceived? Does he routinely misspeak?
If not, then we really need to let our husbands speak for themselves and take their words at face value.
(But what if he is being dishonest, manipulative, passive-aggressive? Try taking him at his word and let him live with it. It’s not your job to police him. If he doesn’t get what he wants because he won’t ask simply and honestly, that’s on him. Perhaps he will learn from it and deal with his stuff. I’m not talking about the dangerous stuff (get help immediately), just the day-to-day stuff.)
