Back to School

A couple of days ago I talked about being generous. I think we all have a general idea of what that might look like (smile, don’t be cranky, share your chocolate, etc.), but really in a more specific sense, it’s going to look different from person to person.

If we are going to be generous toward our husbands, we need to first find out who they are and what they like and want. In other words, we are going back to school. We need to become students of our husbands and what makes them tick.

As we learn that, we can do kind and generous things toward them that will really bless them and let them know they are loved.

Some husbands would love it if their wife were to buy them a new shirt. My sweetie wouldn’t. He’s very specific about what he likes, so it’s better to let him shop for himself. Though I can keep his clothes clean and ready and that blesses him immensely. Laundry is one chore he’s not too crazy about.

Some husbands would feel blessed if their wife surprised them with a date night out. Others don’t like surprises or would rather curl up at home.

What is your husband like? What would feel generous and caring to him?

Giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others.  Barbara Bush

So, how do I learn what my husband likes and what he wants if he gives little to no feedback ever, on anything. If I ask him, I might get a one-word answer and, if I ask for specifics, I get anger. He hates me asking him questions.

    • Take his one-word answers at face value. It’s not much, but it’s something. Also, I would listen to what he mentions in conversation and watch what he touches. If he walks into a store and flips through a certain magazine or if he reaches for a kind of cracker. Watch what he orders in restaurants or when he’s attentive to a program or commercial. Apparently, words aren’t his thing. You’ll have to work with his choices and actions.
