I don’t remember when or why, but years back I created a personal rule. I don’t ask anyone to do something I’m not willing to do myself (either specifically or in the nature of the concept).
I don’t ask Paul to get me a drink when he’s getting one of his own if I’m not willing to serve him too when I’m doing something for myself.
I don’t ask my kids (now grandkids) to clean up their mess if I’m not willing to clean up after myself.
I don’t expect honesty from those around me if I’m not willing to be honest myself.

Now, of course, there are things I can’t do for myself and I need other’s help. Here’s where the nature of the concept comes in. I can’t help Paul with his computer in the same way he helps me with mine (he is a techie, I am … not). However, I can help him with things that he can’t do (or can’t do easily and I can).
This rule helps me keep my attitudes in check and keep a servant’s heart. It’s the kind of person I want to be.
What do you expect of your spouse? Are you willing to love and serve him in the same way?
… serve one another humbly in love. Galatians 5:13b NIV
