Personal Energy

A couple of days ago I had a physically taxing day. I had a number of activities dumped on top of an already challenging day.

Later, I caught myself speaking with a less than gentle tone of voice. I wasn’t being particularly cranky, but I sounded uncaring and a little brusk.

While that is somewhat understandable, it is something to pay attention to. If I want to have the energy to be kind and attentive, I need to make wise choices about time and energy use.

Yes, those in-your-face days will happen, but if they happen a lot it’s about the choices we make. It’s a good call to build more margin in our lives so we have the energy to speak and act graciously toward our sweeties and all the folks we interact with each day.

It is important to learn what our limits are, and not to make further withdrawals if we are already maximally depleted. Richard A Swenson

I recognize this and will attempt the rest needed, but getting my family to respect it can be hard. I’m frequently pushed to the point of dangerous exhaustion and then they wonder why I snap. The snap isn’t a character flaw on my part. It is nature’s way of getting people to back off so the poor lady can rest!

    • Family is usually the tough one. My overdoing was family/health-related and what are you going to do? Not help? Let them struggle? I figure now and then life is just messy. I try not to agree to anything without setting terms (yes, I can watch your kids this Thursday for two hours when you have an appointment). I don’t promise anything long term without thinking it through (like can I watch them every Thursday?). Something like that means letting something else go and adjusting my schedule. I won’t do crazy long term.
