When I think back to my growing up years, it was a right good mess. Messy family, messy relationships, messy experiences.
I was a mess. I did my best to act the way others did and fit in, but mostly I was confused and adrift.
In thinking about who to write about this month, I went looking for a face in my past and Paula came to mind. She was my age but she had lovely maturity and stability.

And she chose to be my friend. She was my friend through the crazy of junior high and all the challenges of high school. She was even my maid of honor when I married as a young woman.
I bring her up because of her faithfulness. She spent time with me and listened to me. She didn’t try to change me. She just walked alongside me and was my friend.
What a sweet gift in my chaotic world.
I think sometimes we look for greatness and assume it has to be grand and flashy, but often real greatness is quiet and unassuming. The consistent support of a friend, a listening ear, or an encouraging word can change a life.
Thank you, Paula, for being my friend.
When you ask God for a gift, be thankful if he sends not diamonds, pearls, or riches, but the love of real true friends. Helen Steiner Rice
