Shopping for Advice Redux

Recently my husband wrote a post about opinion shopping. I went back and forth about it. Do I just point to it as a good resource or do I need to write something about it too? I settled on the later.

Over the years, we’ve had a number of people come to us and ask our opinion. Thankfully, most people are thoughtful and listen, they keep their brains in gear, and add what we share to the information they are gathering to make a decision (hopefully one that agrees with God’s Word).

However, it’s happened on more than one occasion, we get folks who listen and because we don’t tell them what they want to hear, they just move on to someone else. They keep moving from person to person until they get the advice that agrees with what they want to do or believe.

Now, I’ll be the first to admit, it’s hard to hear advice that challenges what you believe or that asks you to do something really difficult. But sometimes we need to hear something that shakes up our world and pushes us toward God’s standards.

Certainly, many times we will hear agreement in advice (and that’s not a bad thing), but we need to be willing to hear and consider hard advice. What is God’s truth in the situation? What is your sense of what God wants you to do?

The next time you ask someone for advice, ask yourself if you really want the truth or if you want someone to agree with you.

I encourage you to be brave enough to think it through and do things God’s way.

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advise. Proverbs 12:15 ESV
