What You Tell Yourself

I have a jigsaw puzzle app on my tablet. I love doing jigsaw puzzles, but we don’t have the room for real ones in our RV. A puzzle app is the next best thing and I get a free puzzle to work every day. :)

The other day the daily puzzle was a snow scene and it was absolutely beautiful. At that moment I could feel God’s delight in His creation of winter beauty. Now please understand, in Washington state, we can get buried in snow for months. It’s a challenge. It’s a challenge to move around in. It’s a challenge to deal with the cold and it’s a challenge to keep your spirits up when you are largely housebound and the world around you is white, white, and more white.

It was really interesting. When I felt God’s joy in the beauty of snow, it changed my attitude toward the winter. Suddenly I was looking forward to the snow and all the good that winter-at-home brings.

I went from telling myself that “winter is going to be miserable drudgery” to “winter is going to be a beautiful delight.”

The winter hasn’t changed.

I changed what I told myself and it will affect how I do winter.

What do we tell ourselves about our marriages? What are the negative messages that bounce around in our heads (and occasionally come out of our mouths)? What do we need to tell ourselves instead?

We are defined by the stories we tell ourselves. Tony Robbins
