Serving

Linda, Sarah, and I are in John 12 right now (my weekly Bible study (with doing) with folks on the property). We just read the part where Jesus washes the feet of the disciples before He heads to the cross.

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. John 13:12-17 ESV

If I knew I was about to die, I would make the time to communicate the important stuff to the people I love (I try to do that anyway, but imminent death is a good motivator).

Jesus pouring water into a bowl

When you read this text, what does it speak to you?

My first reaction was to remember the times God has blessed me for serving others. It felt good and there’s a sense of deep satisfaction when you are living by Kingdom values.

My second reaction was an icky twinge when I remembered the times others have been cruel with an entitled expectation of service (often a reflection of gender or position). I have to remind myself that I am His kid regardless of how people treat me or what they expect of me. My motivation needs to be my relationship with Him.

I’m going to think on this during the week, deal with my attitudes, and look for opportunities to serve others. Care to join me? Let’s be like Jesus this week. :)

  • Prayer Prompt: Ask God to help you grow your servant’s heart.
  • Couples Question: You want to (pleasantly) surprise your spouse. What do you do?
