Ugh

I’ve been having trouble with hot flashes again which means I’m a bit sleep-deprived. The other morning I woke up for the third time, finally crawled out of bed, and curled up on the couch to read. Then I heard it. There was a soft beep emanating from the office area. I finally found the source but couldn’t make it stop. Now I’m fairly good at blocking out sounds but for the next couple of hours, I pretty much lost the battle of blocking out the beep.

Then I decided I needed a picture of the snow for the blog. I slipped outside and took a picture (brrr!) and then stepped back inside to find the front door wouldn’t stay closed (I finally used some yarn to tie the doorknob to a table leg to keep it shut).

By the time Paul got up a couple of hours later, I was a right good mess. I was sleep-deprived and annoyed by the beep I couldn’t stop and the door I couldn’t fix.

I warned my husband the minute he stepped out of the bedroom (“I’m sleep-deprived and cranky. It’s not you. It’s the beep and the door.” How would you like to wake up to that?). Thankfully he found and fixed the beep. Then he used the hairdryer to unfreeze the doorknob and our front door closed again. He couldn’t do anything about the lack of sleep, but a hug and a cup of coffee go a long way toward making things better (he also thanked me for not waking him up, he really needed the sleep).

Mostly I try to be thoughtful and practical. The lack of sleep makes me dull and non-creative (though you have to admit the yarn thing was pretty cool).

How would y’all have handled it? Just curious.

I’d probably handle it exactly like you did. Maybe even just decide to give up on sleep and read something. Pray. Go outside for a walk or just to sit and watch everything–tie the door shut from the outside? I know I don’t comment on here often, but your blog is always an encouragement to me for the past 9 years since I was first engaged and married. Thank you!

    • Thanks for your encouraging words. I would have gone outside (and do so often in nice weather) but we just had about 10 inches of snow. In retrospect, I could have put in earbuds and listened to music. Ah, well, next time.

I do not function well at all when sleep deprived. I can have the usual cup of coffee with hubs when we get up, add a 2nd to try to shake the cobwebs, and still end up back in bed. I’d rather nap than be cranky and there’s less guilt for sure. Sometimes when I can’t sleep, reading captions on the tv screen will put me back out but it isn’t the same kind of sleep. Fortunately, it isn’t often.
As Amanda above, I appreciate your wisdom even when I don’t stop to say so. ❤️
